Warren Rochelle on Flash FictionFlash! A Short Story!
Seminar: Saturday, May 6, 10:00 am — 12:30 pm at WriterHouse

WriterHouse recently caught up with Warren Rochelle to learn more about his upcoming seminar Flash! A Short Story! Here’s what Warren had to say.

WH: What characteristics do you think make for the most effective flash fiction?
WR: Some characteristics include:an awareness of the parts of a short story and how all interconnect, discipline, a sense of the story as a whole, an eye for sensory detail.

WH: Could writers in all genres benefit from this workshop?
WR: Yes, I think so, as flash fiction helps writers to think of:the value of concise language; the power of the well-chosen detail (especially for character development and capturing a place, conveying an emotion);the weight and power of metaphor and other figurative language; the intensity of language and emotions; why less is so often more. Also, I would argue that whatever a writer’s genre, one can benefit by exploring another: discipline, tight focus on meaning and language, consideration of what happens when a poem becomes a story becomes a … and so on.

WH: Could students bring their longer short stories and attempt to turn them into flash fiction pieces?
WR:
Yes, and some might do the opposite by later turning a flash piece into a longer story. Both can help the writer to really understand what is necessary in a successful short story.
